morals or merits?

Welcome back to another episode of everything is work.

Recently at my university it has been announced that there is now a games soceity that has been created. My initial response was positive and approving, however concern soon crept in like an unwanted guest when I found out that this group was constructed by a first year student.
I hate first year students; I was one last year.

That is not where my doubt comes from though. I feared that an idea that was good in theory would be decimated by parasitic lifeforms known as fanboys. But I swept this thought to one side knowing that Ryan ( our games lecturer ) must have approved this and therefore it must be in good judgement.

So a week later or so we have a website now and Ryan tells us that we can build it. reviews, news all that general stuff and what not. Seems the games soceity has put together some events that will be held at our Student Union Bar. List of games looks varied and for the omst part gets my approval (even the games that don't are still good games but just ain't my thing e.g gears 2) so yeah alcohol, people and games, kind of a winning formula.

We are told that there is a goldeneye night on 25/11, so few ppl are like sounds kl,; will check it out. then about a few hours back I check facebook ( I'm addicted somewhat, woot go zombies app ¬¬ ), tell me one of my friends who is resitting the first year is attending a goldeneye night. As usual I clicked on the event to find out more specific details only to find out that its being held tongight with no updates. so by this time I'm kinda irritated but I still have a positive attitude towards the soceity, things change and events get moved; I understand that. So out of interest I notice that the events creator is none other than 'The Games Soceity'.

Now we already have a group for games students at our university that was created by our lecturer ( go ryan! ^_^ ), but after some thought I accepted that there may be students that don't study games but still wish to play them, I'm no elitest. I mean not every gamer is a developer so in that sense I understand why a seperate group was made. But hold on now it gets fun...

After looking at the group I have found several things that I don't like:
  • There is a £5 Membership fee
  • The soceity has a treasurer
  • The soceity has a secretary
Firstly Why oh lord oh mighty why is there a membership fee?
It's not that I'm tight, but for a soceity where people bring there own games and entertainment and the venue is owned by the university I see little reason for a need for funding this.
With all these positions being handed out it seems more run like a business than an organisation.

My first task is to get some answers, then onwards to war!.... or something like that :P

Yea seems a little fucked up from where I'm standing!

I'm pretty suspicious myself of that treasury business in particular!

Woulda thought that that kinda stuff would be managed by the Uni but it don't seem that way, but instead managed by thier self appointed treasurer! :o Must be something missing here. Still, noone really knows much about it. Hopefully its not all as fucked up as it at first appears to be! ;)

On the positive side, the website set up is awesome... we should totally write some tutorials in AS3.0 or something dude for first years.
