morals or merits?

Welcome back to another episode of everything is work.

Recently at my university it has been announced that there is now a games soceity that has been created. My initial response was positive and approving, however concern soon crept in like an unwanted guest when I found out that this group was constructed by a first year student.
I hate first year students; I was one last year.

That is not where my doubt comes from though. I feared that an idea that was good in theory would be decimated by parasitic lifeforms known as fanboys. But I swept this thought to one side knowing that Ryan ( our games lecturer ) must have approved this and therefore it must be in good judgement.

So a week later or so we have a website now and Ryan tells us that we can build it. reviews, news all that general stuff and what not. Seems the games soceity has put together some events that will be held at our Student Union Bar. List of games looks varied and for the omst part gets my approval (even the games that don't are still good games but just ain't my thing e.g gears 2) so yeah alcohol, people and games, kind of a winning formula.

We are told that there is a goldeneye night on 25/11, so few ppl are like sounds kl,; will check it out. then about a few hours back I check facebook ( I'm addicted somewhat, woot go zombies app ¬¬ ), tell me one of my friends who is resitting the first year is attending a goldeneye night. As usual I clicked on the event to find out more specific details only to find out that its being held tongight with no updates. so by this time I'm kinda irritated but I still have a positive attitude towards the soceity, things change and events get moved; I understand that. So out of interest I notice that the events creator is none other than 'The Games Soceity'.

Now we already have a group for games students at our university that was created by our lecturer ( go ryan! ^_^ ), but after some thought I accepted that there may be students that don't study games but still wish to play them, I'm no elitest. I mean not every gamer is a developer so in that sense I understand why a seperate group was made. But hold on now it gets fun...

After looking at the group I have found several things that I don't like:
  • There is a £5 Membership fee
  • The soceity has a treasurer
  • The soceity has a secretary
Firstly Why oh lord oh mighty why is there a membership fee?
It's not that I'm tight, but for a soceity where people bring there own games and entertainment and the venue is owned by the university I see little reason for a need for funding this.
With all these positions being handed out it seems more run like a business than an organisation.

My first task is to get some answers, then onwards to war!.... or something like that :P

Update for flash game development

Well there's not much of an update tbh.
but radik782 made some nice code that I asked him to for the enemy movement, so credit to him.
though i wish he would accept the creative freedom i'm allowing him as project lead i also understand that I am at time unspecific and somewhat vague with my requests concerning the game.
but hey it's a learning process and i've never really taken a lead role so it's all kinda new to me.

I was gonna work on the code for the player movement and the arrays concerning player weaponry however it seems my trial for flash has expired so now i will have to *ahem* aqcuire a key to activate it.

>_>
<_<
^_^

anyways havent had much time for much work or games.
played a bit of GTA4 and saints row 2 this weeks... then i realised they havent had trophy patches yet so i stopped.
So for now I'm just working my way through SW:TFU slowly.

I seem to be falling behind on my java and C# and the moment, which is not a surprise considering I'm writing this blog in a Java Lab sesssion :P.

But my shifts at my part time job are letting up a bit so I will get moe time to do some programming from now on.

Final note; Going to see video games live this friday. WOOT! *is such a geek*

anyway till next time.

It begins

Hi all,

Ok some basic concepts and ideas are being drawn up atm between me and radik782.
Should be some collabarative stuff going on... that is after he builds my new pc ;).

ive gone back to combining shit kinda.

- wipeout HD is awesome
- trophies mean everything. :P

should have some designs ready before tuesday.

btw started yr 2 of uni now. so have less time now :'(
--------------------------------------------------
OK this the rough design plan

Game: Space invader clone type thing
Group Size: 3

I've split the tasks up into 3 sections; Level design, Player design, Enemy design.

Level design consists of the following aspects:
  • Backgrounds and if the need be the ability to animate/ scroll them
  • Menu's
  • Options/Settings/ Difficulty
  • Score/Score table
  • Lives
  • Power Up's
Enemy Design consists of the following aspects:
  • Enemy art/ Animations
  • Enemy movement
  • Enemy Attacks
  • Enemy AI
Player Design consists of the following aspects:
  • Player Art/ Animations
  • Player movement
  • Player attacks
Thats all i can think of for now

False Foundations

This is gonna be a short blog, so short that I will just use bullet points ;)

  • I'm back from Miami - was hot
  • New blog structure, I'm starting to think that everything needs some design discipline so there will be only 2 posts a week now, 1 for the games dev side and 1 for the general personal updates and stuff.
  • miami... hot, cant stress that enough
  • back at uni next week ( not so hot)

All Heart and no soul

Currently playing
Firstly I would like to declare that I have finished with The legend of Zelda :Twilight princess. I did not complete it 100% but I am finished with the game. My in game collections look a little like this at the end:
  • 45 / 45 Heart pieces
  • 26 / 26 golden bugs
  • 55 / 60 poe souls
  • Every upgrade (with the exception of frog lure)
It's done now, and I need not ever look back. Other than that I've just been playing RE4 wii edition and practicing on guitar hero to rack up my star power. ( tho someone likes getting the top score on my game :/ )

Currently Reading
Current reading is still 'rules of play', I'll prob give a full review when I have finished it. I've also recently started reading 'The God Dellusion' by Richard Dawkins, which i'll hold any judgement on till i read a bit more.

Currently Listening to
This Week 'Lifehouse' has been on my playlist quite a bit with this song in particular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHfzrqLIniE

Also 'Jars of clay' frequently increased their play count this week, can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjOpDQqW910

Other honourable mentions go to the following:

FFVI, Terra's theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExqC2T232sk
'Robot high school' by My robot friend - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7quH25cszo

Other
That's all for now as I have to get organized because I will be going to miami for 3 weeks on holiday where i will probably drink 2 or 3....

... times my own body weight in alcohol each night. Hey don't look at me like that!

Well me off for now, till next time.

Mental Block

I haven't done bugger all today... well I've done less than I normally do anyway.
Some sort of mental block, though I dislike referring to it as a block because I would find it hard to believe that there is a Lego-ish shaped object lodged in my head blocking the path of my thoughts and if it was physically there, not being able to concentrate would rank low on my concerns.

But that aside I have been able to do some reading, mainly on 'Rules of Play' by Katie Salen & Eric Zimmerman. Has some nice concepts that can be applied not only to games design but all design processes. It also points out the progression of games' social development amongst other medium.
If nothing else It's an interesting read and has somewhat made me think about my approach to games design and development with more consideration for planning and testing.

*YAWN* yeah I know that was boring. I have been really lazy with completing games lately as well, I';m determined I'm gonna beat Twilight Princess tomorrow. Also been neglecting practice on Guitar Hero which is a shame because i just started being able to tackle some hard mode songs.

Well I'm off ( as if anyone would read this ).
